Evolution of IIMM
Five decades of building, codifying and elevating the supply management profession in India.
A profession, formalised
India in the mid-1970s was rapidly industrialising, but materials and purchase functions were largely treated as clerical roles. A group of senior practitioners, public-sector executives and academics came together in 1976 to create an institute that would set standards, deliver formal education and represent the profession nationally.
IIMM was registered as a not-for-profit professional body and immediately set about building a curriculum and a branch network. Today, the institute spans 52 branches, 19 chapters and a community of more than 100,000 active members.
